Job Description:

The Lansing State, Journal, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks Now news reporter

Can you feel the pulse of a community? Will you go anywhere for a great story? Are you an expert at sifting through tweets, posts and social media shares to discern what’s top-of-mind for a local audience? If you want to go beyond aggregation to find the people behind the posts and tell their stories, then we want to hear from you.

The Now news reporter is a fast-paced position driven by community conversations. The reporter is responsible for finding the topics being discussed right now and generating content that explains or adds to the story for a larger audience.

LSJ’s coverage area is a tri-county area nestled in the middle of Michigan – made up of various communities experiencing all of the major issues and hottest topics filling the news nationwide. Greater Lansing is home to a burgeoning marijuana industry, world-leading research in nuclear science at a major university and beloved local food and beverage options that regularly trend on social media. Our Now news reporter must be ready to leap into these and other topics to stay on top of community conversations.

Desired skills:

• Strong people skills, a year (or more) of daily journalism experience and proven expertise in social media – including eagerness to try new platforms;
• Ability to understand metrics and how to leverage them for growth;
• Ability to write clear, compelling articles that demonstrate quality ideas rather than clickbait.

Qualifications:

• Successful candidates must be able to embrace the digital (online) focus of our modern media company.
• Also required is experience collaborating in a cross-functional environment, a four-year college degree in journalism and the ability to meet deadlines.
• This job includes some evening and weekend work.
• This job required a valid driver's license and the applicable vehicle insurances.
