Job Description:

The Scripps Internship Program gives students real-world experience and provides a unique insight into broadcasting operations. This includes learning alongside newsroom management, reporters, writers, photographers, producers, editors and assignment desk editors in areas including but not limited to news, weather, sports, investigative, web, and special projects.

Broadcasting Learning Path

Interns assigned to the Broadcasting path will learn to research, write, capture visual content and edit stories for multiple platforms as well as create, lead and organize content for multiple platforms. The responsibilities / tasks of the intern may include but are not limited to items from the list below:

Evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas
Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research
Organize material, determines slant or emphasis, and write story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards
Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories
Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms
Assist news producer in preparing newscast
Assist online staff in preparing for multi- media stories
Report, write (including voice-overs and sound-to-tape), capture visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline
Develop and organize newscasts; responsible for writing, story development and showcasing
Work closely with news managers and assignment editors to determine content needs
Enhance content of the rundown with graphics, video, research, and station branding
Perform desktop editing
Develop and posts content to station's Web sites
Utilize web analytics
Other duties as assigned



Enrolled at an accredited college or university
Registered as a Sophomore or above and in good standing


Computer/typing skills
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in person and on the phone
Completed at least one broadcasting journalism writing course
Good organization skills
Computer-based research abilities
Strong writing skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
Experience with videography and non-linear editing
Knowledge of Associated Press style
Experience developing content for websites and social media
Strong editorial judgment
Familiar with journalistic ethics and libel laws
Self-motivated and enjoys working in a fast, deadline-driven environment
Ability to write conversationally and excellent verbal communication skills
Strong planning, organization and problem solving skills
Knowledge of Content Management Systems, HTML, Audio Editing, Image Editing, Social Networking

Other Requirements:

Valid Driver's License, good driving record and certificate of insurance
Must be able to lift 40 pounds
May require flexible hours, early mornings, nights or weekends
