Job Description:

As a public service news organization, NPR is committed to producing ground-breaking original journalism that serves the public interest. As part of that commitment, NPR is creating a new Investigative Team specifically responsible for uncovering significant and ground-breaking stories connected to the major news events of the day. The Breaking News I-Team will use public records, data and other reporting tools in pursuit of these stories. Successful candidates will be expected to produce consequential journalism on the tightest of deadlines, working in close collaboration with NPR’s beat reporters and Member stations. The Breaking News I-Team’s work will appear across all NPR’s broadcast and digital platforms.

NPR is looking for an Assistant Producer/Associate Producer to support the work of this team. The producer will work closely with team’s three reporters to uncover significant and compelling stories for both audio and text. Our ideal candidate will work as an off-air reporter developing sources, researching story ideas and working with databases and documents. There will also be opportunities for the Producer to develop, write and voice their own stories whenever possible.

In addition to these reporting responsibilities, the producer coordinates and manages the work of the unit, coordinating closely with NPR’s desks, broadcast shows, podcasts and digital platforms.


• Supports investigative and enterprise projects and stories, online and on-air, by working closely with reporters and editors in the investigative unit, as well as with NPR’s beat reporters and subject area experts.
• Edits and mixes audio elements to produce broadcast-ready pieces that meet the highest standards for quality, balance and storytelling composition.
• Writes digital stories and leads digital engagement efforts as needed.
• Develops sources, initiates and reports stories and supports projects initiated by others.
• Works on short and medium deadline pieces for both audio and text, sometimes simultaneously.
• Assists the Breaking News I-Team Editor in coordinating across desks and shows to develop original off-the-news reporting. Coordinates and manages scheduling and deadlines with shows, desks and other partners and platforms.
• Works with all departments to integrate digital and broadcast efforts and to help present investigative stories effectively on multiple platforms.
• Ensures that all content complies with NPR’s standards for accuracy and fairness.
• Assists in developing investigative projects useful to Member stations.
• Assumes other duties as assigned by the Senior Investigations Editor.

: College degree and/or equivalent work experience.


• At least 4 years of journalism experience.
• Ability to produce journalism for multiple platforms, including experience with social media and basic web production
• A proven track record of sophisticated, high-quality audio production, including work on complex topics and story ideas.
• Audio field production experience, including work on enterprise stories under long and short deadlines.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills and demonstrated writing ability.
• Ability to handle multiple complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
• Ability to work efficiently, calmly and cooperatively under deadline pressure.
• Willingness to innovate, learn new skills and create new ways to serve the NPR community on all platforms.
• Ability and willingness to work varied shifts.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.


• On-air experience.
• Experience working on investigative and computer-assisted reporting projects.
• Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system.
