Location: Washington, DC Job Status: Full Time

Job Description:

NPR is looking for a smart, enthusiastic editorial leader to guide our climate change coverage.
What are the big stories NPR should be telling in the next few years? How would that coverage get told on multiple platforms--radio programs and newscasts, podcasts, online and visual reporting?

For decades, scientists have issued warnings of a warming climate and now the consequences; deadly heat waves, drought, record flooding and bigger storms are being felt in our daily lives. Just how citizens, businesses, science and governments struggle to cope with a quickly changing climate is at the heart of our coverage.

The supervising climate editor will have a strong vision and a nuanced understanding of this vital beat. The successful candidate will challenge us as we strive for new, creative ways to report on this dynamic area of coverage. The position requires a talented leader able to inspire others.

Climate coverage at NPR spans our entire newsroom: Our five flagship radio shows, podcasts, the National, Science, International, Investigative and Business desks, our Newscast unit, our news web team, dataviz and visuals experts. We also work with NPR member station reporters as they cover how a changing climate is impacting their own regions. The ideal candidate will need to coordinate NPR’s cross-network coverage as well as help shape our individual stories to showcase our best reporting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Collaborate with other editors to lead coverage on daily, weekly and long-term, original journalism.
• Develop and edit original and consequential stories about climate change that meet NPR’s standards for accuracy, fairness and newsworthiness.
• Help edit broadcast and text-focused stories, often in long-form, with the same ambition, creativity and high editorial standards as NPR’s audio projects.
• Take responsibility for the success of enterprising projects on all editorial platforms, including digital and visual media, social networks and various audio platforms, with the goal of reaching the largest audiences with the biggest impact.
• Work collaboratively with editors, reporters and producers throughout the newsroom to pursue reporting threads.
• Guide reporters to make use of reporting tools like FOIA and state equivalents, financial filings, database acquisition and analysis and data mining to uncover original stories that matter.
• Ensure climate coverage incorporates diverse sources, including; people of color, gender, regional voices, and other under-represented communities.
• Work with other NPR employees, member station reporters and editors and external editorial partners in developing reporting projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

• A passion for storytelling on all kinds of platforms.
• Demonstrated ability to both conceive and plan stories -- large and small, across multiple platforms—and dive into the details and follow through to bring them to fruition.
• Proven ability to consistently work well with others in a large newsroom.
• Produce original, distinctive stories that break news and advance coverage.
• At least 5 years’ experience editing or covering the environment and climate change.
• At least 10 years’ experience in a daily or weekly news organization.
• A deep familiarity with climate science and policy.
• Thorough knowledge of news, feature and investigative reporting techniques.
• Grace under deadline pressure.
• Ability to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement may apply should you choose not to accept a transfer.
