  Education Reporter, Hamilton County
Employer: Gannett Job Posted: 10/22/2019
Location: Indianapolis, IN Job Status: Full Time

Job Description:

IndyStar is looking for an urgent, thoughtful and aggressive reporter to fill one of its key beats -- coverage of K-12 education in Hamilton County, which is the fastest-growing and wealthiest county in Indiana.

Hamilton County residents care deeply about education. They expect their schools to be among the best in the state – and they are. So much so that these schools are a driving force in the county’s rapid growth. In short, people live here because of the schools. People her exhibit tremendous pride in their schools – from their neighborhood elementary school to Carmel High School, which at nearly 5,300 students, is one of the large public high schools in the nation.

The successful candidate will focus on issues coverage that affects the quality of life for students, parents, teachers and taxpayers who live in these communities. We will expect some meeting coverage, but more importantly we want to spot trends and identify issues before they end up on school board agendas.

This position is based in the IndyStar downtown Indianapolis newsroom, though the reporter is expected to spend considerable time in Hamilton County, which is connected to Indianapolis on the north side.

Requirements of this position:

• Watchdog reporting instincts, skills and experience (if you are uncomfortable asking the tough questions or filing a public records act request this isn’t the position for you).
• Ability to take sometimes complicated subject matter and make it accessible and clear (if you simply parrot the bureaucrats this isn't the position for you)
• Desire to write about issues through the experiences of those affected (if you think superintendents and curriculum directors are the central figures that drive stories this isn't the position for you)
• Enthusiasm for identifying, maintaining and nurturing an audience through sophisticated use of analytics (if you just assume people read your story this isn't the position for you)
• Passion for multi-platform, multi-media journalism (if you think video is for the photo folks or every story should look like a traditional 'newspaper' story this definitely isn't the position for you)
• Sophisticated understanding of how to use social media to break news and promote your work (if you don't ... well, you get the idea)
