Job Description:

The real estate-development reporter helps the community understand an important and complex issue. The reporter is a combination of a diligent beat reporter and tough investigative reporter. The reporter must become a recognized authority on residential real estate and development in the suburban metropolitan New York market. Current trends include transit-oriented development, the balance between growth and gentrification, and the changing nature of the suburbs. He or she will have a deep understanding of the unique audience for this topic and build its loyalty through unique, noteworthy content. The reporter will produce long-form, deeply researched journalism but will also break spot news from the beat, using social and mobile tools to expand a story’s reach. The real estate-development reporter consults with an editor regularly but has great command of the topic and does not need constant supervision or heavy editing. This is a position of considerable independence.

• Use unique knowledge and social voice to engage with this topic’s audience.
• Employ new tools and techniques to extend important stories to new audiences.
• Collaborate with other reporters on this topic across the USA TODAY Network. .
• Other duties as assigned.

• This position functions with a great deal of autonomy because of the command of the topic. He or she will consult and communicate with editors regularly, but not need careful oversight.
• The person will advise and coach other reporters when one of their stories involves the topic.

Requirements:
Education/Certification Requirements


• B.A. or higher in journalism, mass communications or equivalent experience.

Experience Required or Preferred

• Prior experience in a daily news organization or digital-only publication required.

Specialized Knowledge Required or Preferred

• Proven ability to develop a complex beat.
• Experience using FOIA and other tools.
• Ability to tell complex stories with sophisticated storytelling.
• Ability to convey these stories to new digital audiences.
• Knowledge of Associated Press style.
• Thorough understanding of social media best practices.
• Ability to use metrics to understand readers’ interests in the topic.

Universal Skills and Traits Preferred

• Excellent writing and reporting skills.
• Knowledge of media ethics and basic copyright rules.
• Ability to with minimal daily direction.
• Ability to spot topics with high audience interest for local and national markets.
• Understanding of digital-first culture and how watchdog stories should be delivered on new technology.

Technology/Equipment Expertise or Proficiency

• Basic understanding of computer publishing systems.
• Strong experience with databases, public records and computer-assisted research.
• Familiarity with basic video, social and mobile tools.

• Travel Requirements: Mostly office-based, but will include local travel as story needs dictate. Could fluctuate between 10-50 percent of the job, but will rarely extend to overnight stays unless there is breaking news.
• Managerial Responsibility: This person will not manage others, but they will directly assist in prioritizing assignments and help dictate story priority.
• This position is news-based. While it will usually consist of daytime hours during peak digital traffic, there will be fluidity in schedule in the event of breaking news. This could include weekend or holiday work if the news dictates.
