At CNN Digital, the way we tell stories is just as important as the stories themselves. Whether it's breaking news, investigative journalism, or enterprise storytelling, our visual journalism breaks down stories for audiences in unique and interesting ways. The diversity of approaches allows us to better inform our audiences with essential and engaging news storytelling.
We are expanding our visual journalism team and are looking for a talented journalist who will help pitch and execute visual storytelling on the web - from compelling data-driven graphics, maps and interactive projects to experimental and emerging storytelling techniques. The person in this role will collaborate with a team of visual editors and journalists across the organization. This is a position where you will be expected to pitch your own stories as well as collaborate with others to create high impact visual journalism. The position is based in New York, DC or Atlanta and reports to the Director of Visual News.
Pitch and create graphics and visuals-driven stories relevant to the news cycle
Partner with editors and reporters to brainstorm visual coverage ideas and find gaps in current story planning. Plan proactively for major events and identify strong visual opportunities
Work on visually led stories for daily, long form, and breaking news, including maps, charts, infographics, animations, and mobile-first interactives
Collaborate with the Visual News team to refine standards and best practices for storytelling forms including data visualizations, interactives, photography, illustrations, and animations
You are enthusiastic about excellent visual journalism and can share that enthusiasm with patience and clarity
You put the journalism first, have impeccable news judgment, know how to evaluate sources, and are always asking "what's the best way to tell this story?"
You work at a high metabolism, have a lot of story ideas, and can make decisions quickly around how to best cover breaking news and developing stories
Experience with modern mapping tools (QGIS, MapBox, Maps4News, Google, etc.)
Ability to work with data to create graphics, and at least some experience using the relevant tools (R, Python, SQL, Excel, etc.)
A reader-first perspective and strong commitment to multiplatform storytelling
A portfolio of published graphics and/or maps
You're comfortable working collaboratively, individually and with cross-functional teams
You are a varsity level communicator and feel as comfortable walking through a story pitch with editors as you do giving and receiving honest, constructive feedback on your work
At least three years of experience in a journalistic setting, but likely more
Note: You may not have every single one of these skills, and that's OK! We're flexible on your exact skillset as long as you bring curiosity and willingness to learn. Ideally you will have at least one of the major buckets covered (cartography, data analysis and visualization, or strong development skills).
